New American Freedom Summer
In south Florida, Haitian refugees are often detained, families are separated, and civil liberties are denied. In Arizona --where there is an anti-immigrant referendum poised for a state-wide vote--immigrants face armed vigilantes, ruthless smugglers, and death in the desert. These and other acts of discrimination require a movement to empower Latino and Haitian communities through mobilizing for change.
The New American Freedom Summer seeks activists who will volunteer a minimum of 4-6 weeks this summer to:
- Make door to door contacts with immigrants to encourage them to engage in civic life;
- Participate in community-based education around immigrant rights; and
- Engage in direct action “Truth Brigades” that expose the problems of our broken immigration system.
Requirements:
- Fund-raising plan to cover costs (scholarships and suggestions for funding are available);
- Willingness to work campaign-style hours;
- Strong communications skills; and
- Desire to work within the coalition to empower immigrants to participate in civic life.
Prior to working in Arizona or Florida , participants will receive training in Mississippi from leaders of the 1964 Freedom Summer. This training will take place June 28-June 30. Participants will begin work July 1. Participants will receive a minimum stipend of $150/week. Accommodations will be arranged at each site.
