Hartford Court of Common Council Passes Resolution Supporting the Freedom Ride

WHEREAS, The Immigrant Workers Freedom Ride (IWFR), inspired by the freedom rides of the momentous Civil Rights Movement, is a national mobilization to focus public attention on immigrant rights; and

WHEREAS, A national mobilization, of individuals and organizations from all sectors of society, is necessary to demonstrate to Congress and to the President that there is widespread support in the United States for meaningful immigration legislative reform that recognizes the contribution of immigrant workers to the quality of social, cultural, political and economic life in the United States; and

WHEREAS, People from all over the country will participate in this event which will begin in 10 cities on September 20th and culminate in a mass rally on October 4, 2003 in Flushing Meadows Park, Queens, New York; and

WHEREAS, The IWFR will stop in Hartford on September 29, 2003 to rally support for immigrant workers rights; and

WHEREAS, Approximately 3,000 Connecticut residents will leave from New Haven, Hartford, Danbury and New London traveling to New York City to participate in this national movement; and

WHEREAS, The City of Hartford supports immigration policies that promote equality and fair treatment to all; NOW THEREFORE BE IT

RESOLVED: That the Mayor and the Hartford Court of Common Council supports the mission of the Immigrant Workers Freedom Ride, welcomes the participants of the freedom ride on their stop in Hartford, and urges Hartford residents to participate in this most important movement; AND BE IT FURTHER

RESOLVED: That the Mayor and the Hartford Court of Common Council applaud the efforts of the Freedom Riders to protect the rights and civil liberties of immigrants, to bring meaningful reform of immigration laws, and to encourage civic participation by new and future citizens.
